Position Description
The Seattle Department of Human Resources endeavors to promote an equitable and engaging work environment so employees can do their best work and make a difference for the people and communities we serve. As part of this mission, the Compensation & Classification unit administers the Citywide job classification and compensation programs for approximately 12,500 regular employees and more than 1,200 job classifications. This work is based on and champions equity by identifying potential systemic inequities in position allocation and compensation, analyzing perceived and actual race, gender, and age disparities in City government. Within this unit, we have an opportunity for a Compensation & Classification Trainee to build HR skills that are in high demand. You’ll be working with a team that wants to invest in your future by taking the time to train and develop you, allowing you to gain subject matter knowledge and expertise in a niche function within Human Resources.
Job Responsibilities
In this role, you would start by learning the fundamentals of City of Seattle Compensation & Classification, including:
- Learning the role, value, and impact of Job Classification work in the organization
- Reviewing and using a Position Description Questionnaire (PDQ) to determine job classification
- Learning critical City guidelines, policies, and ordinances
- Engaging with team members, department members, and citywide partners to solve problems
From this foundation, you would continue to build the skills you need to become a Classification Analyst by:
- Shadowing Classification Analysts
- Gathering pertinent information
- Evaluating documents
- Applying rules and guidelines
- Analyzing situations
- Writing focused reports and recommendations

Qualifications
In addition to the skills and experience mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications (or a combination of education and/or experience and/or training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class):
- A Bachelor’s Degree Human Resource Management, Business or Public Administration, Social Sciences, or a related field
OR
- An Associate Degree in Human Resource Management, Business or Public Administration, Social Sciences, or a related field
- One year of experience in professional personnel administration or a related field
OR
- Two years of experience in professional personnel administration or a related field
