ATDps: July 2022 Virtual Member Event

Remember the following statement. It pervades workplace learning everywhere!

Memory is flawed.

At the end of the day, no matter what you do, it is universally understood that 80% of what you present/teach will be forgotten.

Until recently, that ‘fact’ was ubiquitous: established by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, the ‘Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve’ has been robustly confirmed by memory researchers ever since.

Choosing between ‘learning for memorization’ and ‘learning for understanding’ is now, in fact, a choice. When you learn to understand, you retain that information and willingly build upon that knowledge base. And, you can do so in less time, with more success and more excellent retention.

During this session on July 14, join the founders of Brain-centric Design, Kieran O’Mahony, Ph.D., and Rich Carr, BcID as they present how to do that.

Come experience actionable brain science that engages every learner at a profoundly personal level, every time, with every concept, whether it’s delivered in-person, online, or hybrid. You will discover how placing human emotions before business outcomes can engage work cultures to be intrinsically motivated and keep it cognitive.

You won’t forget it.

Our guests:

Kieran O’Mahony, Ph.D.,

and Rich Carr, BcID

RICH CARR

Rich Carr is the founder of Carr Knowledge, Brain-centric Design, The Education Engine, and the Neuroscience of Learning Academy, providing 21st-century neural upskilling – placing human emotions before business outcomes - for innovative professional Communicators, Coaches, and Educators. An honored graduate in Mass Media and Mass Communications, Carr is also an Army veteran and a decorated graduate of the Department of Defense Information and Electronic Journalism Schools. Carr has owned and operated radio stations in his decorated career of over 40 years in talent development, managed Telemundo television and monthly magazines, and functioned as Paul Allen's Director of Digital Media, combining radio, television, internet, and professional sports properties for market and communications dominance.

KIERAN O'MAHONY

Dr. Kieran O'Mahony is the founder of the Institute for Connecting Neuroscience with Teaching and Learning (iCNtl), a Seattle-based nonprofit that provides professional development for K–12 teachers to improve learning outcomes. As a learning scientist focusing on cognitive neuroscience, Dr. O'Mahony carried out systems research at the University of Washington College of Education LIFE Center (Learning in Informal and Formal Environments), the first NSF-funded Science of Learning Center that studied the social aspects of how children learn. This work explores settings and processes aligned with pedagogical, brain-enabled methodologies, which he believes are instrumental in fostering deep understanding, prolonged engagement, and collaborative outcomes that foster human development in a fast-paced and challenging new century.

Puget Sound Chapter Programs have been pre-approved by the ATD Certification Institute for continuing education credits towards professional development hours for recertification of the Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) and Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) credentials.
