Remember, the Chapter's Innovation Initiative starts next month.  To help you start understanding what innovation is and why it is so important, here is the link to a recent, in-depth article from the New York Times on one of our country's lost jewels of innovation, Bell Labs. Knowing a bit about what Bell Labs contributed to this country and how it worked is a good start on thinking more clearly about how to reinvigorate the creative process for our own times and region. You may have noticed that the latest major election cycle, which will culminate in November, has begun in earnest.  This means that WLP professionals need to be finding out where the candidates stand on training-related issues.

You may have also noticed that "training" is a very popular subject these days. Public officials across the political spectrum see training as one of the great social needs of our time.  And while their ideologies and approaches to issues may vary widely, officials understand very well that our nation, as well as individual states and cities, must somehow provide more training and re-training to many more people if we are to tackle the festering problems of unemployment and for our country to be more competitive globally. What the officials don't have much awareness of is the professionals who provide the training and who have the first-hand knowledge of current needs and best practices.

That's where I come in as the Chapter's Director of Public Resources Information and Strategies, responsible for the Chapter's government affiars activities.  I want to make sure the WLP profession takes advantage of this golden opportunity to exert more influence on shaping training-related legislation and policies.

I am currently setting up informational interviews and with the Washington State Senate and House committee chairmen who oversee workforce development programs and policies.  Over the weeks and months to come I will be extending this information-gathering effort to the two major gubernatorial campaigns, the candidates for federal offices (the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives), and selected key races for state office.

I want your input, whether general or specific, that we should be asking all candidates or even certain ones about their stands as it impacts training in Washington State?

Here are three basic questions I have come up with so far:

How can Washington State use training to help attract and retain the businesses and jobs of the future?

How should we be providing assistance to promote lifelong learning to help upgrade workers' skills and keep skills current?

How should we be providing training to help the unemployed (particularly the long-term unemployed) rejoin the workforce?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Since our presenters mentioned this at the excellent Tuesday Chapter meeting earlier this week, I am posting the link to Chris Anderson's TED talk on how web video powers global innovation.

Anderson has a long career as a journalist and publisher and is now the curator of the TED organization.  TED, which started out as the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference in 1984, is a non-profit organization devoted to, as its motto puts it, Ideas Worth Spreading.

This video is a great prelude to ASTDps's Innovation Initiative coming this spring.  It will get you to thinking about the ways that we can help our area organizations become more creative and innovative and make the Puget Sound region the innovation leader in the world.

Presenters: Michael Baker and Stacy Lindenberg, First Citizen's Bank

Too often, vendor selection decisions are made in a vacuum. Without consulting others in your organization, utilizing research, and tying the decision to organizational objectives, you risk having the project rejected, a costly, drawn out implementation, or under-utilization of the system. This session addresses the entire selection process, and shares best practices along the way. In addition, attendees will receive templates to use in their own organizations to support the process. Attendees can plan ahead and avoid pitfalls associated with vendor selection. They will learn the step-by-step process of vendor selection, creating buy-in, presenting to executive level stakeholders, implementation, and continuous marketing.  Register here.

    ILA 33rd Annual Convention

We ARE Listening: Advocate, Research, Educate

    More details on our calendar

Exciting news!  Board Members Darren Nerland and Nicole Forward will be presenting at the conference~

The members of ILA cover a broad spectrum of interests and professions, from education, business, research, and general backgrounds. These include university professors, physicians and healthcare providers, business consultants, training and development professionals, business coaches, leadership professionals, musicians, and many other specialties. What field does not encompass some aspect of listening!
For this particular session, we will probably see mostly our business special interest group members, but we will also see members from the other specialties, as well.

The International Listening Association is a professional association dedicated to the study and teaching of effective listening in a wide variety of settings.
(Please see our website at www.listen.org for further information about the organization. There is additional information about the 2012 Convention on the site, as well.)

Our Convention typically has about 120-150 attendees, and they come from the U.S. and a number of foreign countries. We also have a special interest group in the organization that focuses on listening in a business setting, and we have partnered with several other ASTD chapters around the country at some of our past Conventions, offering special programs and mini-conferences that relate to training and development and listening.
