ATD Competencies Addressed in Presentation: Integrated Talent Management and Managing Learning Programs
Even learning professionals can overlook the finding that time spent “in the classroom” was found to contribute to development in unique ways, including: giving participants exposure to new ideas or practice new behaviors, time to reflect, and opportunities to connect with other leaders. This chapter illustrates recent efforts at Microsoft to leverage the investment of time in-the-classroom to increase leaders’ learning orientation, as one tool for increasing the return on leader development from challenging roles. Microsoft has a culture that prizes intelligence and rewards expertise. Growing leaders’ learning orientation within that context is an ambitious goal. It’s clear, after years of trying, that we will not drive organization-level impact on learning orientation via individual-level capability building (such as 1:1 coaching) alone. In this session, we describe an experiment, using a classroom-type setting, to prize and reward curiosity and frame “not knowing” as a leadership act. We outline our experiment, lessons learned, and anecdotal evidence of impact, in the hopes that others will be encouraged to experiment with classroom time to optimize the unique value it can provide.
