ATDps: February 2017 Chapter Meeting
Best Practices Sharing: Working for managers without talent development backgrounds
This chapter meeting will focus on the Knowledge Management pillar of ATD's overall competency model and aspects of the Interpersonal Skills foundational competency.
The Association for Talent Development defines Knowledge Management as the ability to capture, distribute, and archive intellectual capital to encourage knowledge-sharing and collaboration. Successfully executing knowledge management initiatives involves being able to:
- Encourage collaboration
- Benchmark knowledge management best practices and lessons learned
- Establish a knowledge culture
- Manage the information life cycle
- Transform knowledge into learning
- Evaluate knowledge management success
Knowledge management is a key competency that learning and development professionals must practice to be skilled in their work. This knowledge management competency is intimately linked to interpersonal skills as building trust, influencing stakeholders, and communicating effectively are imperative to communicating wisely with others.
As talent development professionals, we know that one of the best ways to cultivate learning is to provide opportunities for best practice sharing among learners. This member meeting will be a facilitated conversation, where members will share with each other their best practices on effectively working with peers and supervisors who do not have a background in learning and development. Come share your best practices with each other by bringing examples of how you facilitate, support, and encourage this collaboration in your organizations—or, review the list above before the chapter meeting to help spark your own questions about how to overcome a knowledge management hurdle you're facing.
